Remote Controlled Glider set new speed record

RAMS Member Mike Kolver sent in this video of a glider using Dynamic Soaring to achieve a new speed record at 882 kph (548 mph).  The previous record was set in 2018 at 877 kph (545 mph).  While the video is pretty impressive to watch you may want to check out the article as it also has some interesting information in it as well.

Beechmont Gliding

Calan Moss took his glider up to Lower Beechmont for a fly and strapped a camera to it for some great shots…  (not as fast the one above though!)

RAMS Defibrillator

As we are getting older a heart attack is an increasing risk we all face.  You never know when it may strike you or another member.  It is important we all know RAMS has access to an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) at our club and where to find it. Please read this small article on our website on where to find the RAMS AED.

These little devices received great exposure in July 1990 when Australia’s richest man, Kerry Packer, was famously resuscitated by one at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Although the device used was officially called a Heart Start 2000 it was thereafter affectionately referred to as a “Packer Whacker” for obvious reasons.

Days Off – Flying Sessions Suspended

Historically, every year, RAMS shares the field with other schools or clubs requesting to use the field.  These requests go through Redlands Council.  Currently the dates the field will be unavailable to RAMS Members are as follows;

Weekday Date Who is using
Sunday 28 Mar 2021 Redland Royals Brisbane Cricket
Sunday 4 Apr 2021 Redland Royals Brisbane Cricket
Friday 14 May 2021 Ormiston State School
Friday 4 Jun 2021 Ormiston State School

If there is any change to these dates we will let you know via the website with a banner on the home page as a reminder so please check there first.

For the days above there will be no flying session at Henry Ziegenfusz Park.  There has been some suggestion to use Judy Holt Recreation Reserve (539-563 Old Cleveland Road East, Birkdale QLD 4159) if you would still like to fly on those days.

Trainers

We would love to hear from any of our members who would be interested in knowing what is required to be a trainer.  If you would like to know more please don’t hesitate to email or call any of the Committee Members to have a chat.

Suggestions Box

We would love to hear from you if you would like to see any specific content covered in our Newsletter.  Please also fee free to provide photos and a story about anything you think may be of interest to other RAMS Members.  Just email secretary@rams.asn.au

  1. Question for Rodney

Do we, as a club, have council permits to use Judy Holt Reserve when our field is being used by other organisations and is not available ?????

    Cheers

    Glen

    1. Hi Glen,

I have checked with council. It’s not a given that permission is granted just because access to Henry Ziegenfusz has been taken away. Unfortunately the two Sunday’s that have been taken from us Judy Holt Reserve is not available. The council are looking for alternatives for us and I will update the members as soon as we know. Thanks Rodney

    2. Hi Glen, only as of a couple of days ago (10th March, 2021) has the MAAA recognised our use of Judy Holt Park as a secondary location. We would be fine to use this so long as we notify and gain agreement from council each time we intend to use it.
      Cheers
      Rodney
